Quick overview: Latest progress in the development of new paper power stacks

Dec 6, 2022

Recently, Dr. Li Jianyi of Vision Central Research Institute was invited to attend the 2022 GaoGong Hydrogen Power Annual Conference and delivered a keynote speech on "Development of New Paper Power Stack™ Polar Plate".

Dr. Li Jianyi said: As the core component of fuel cell, bipolar plate should have high electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength, high gas tightness, corrosion resistance and other qualities. For example, graphite bipolar plate has the disadvantage of thin thickness and low bending strength, while metal bipolar plate has the disadvantage of corrosion of passivation layer and low lifetime.

The paper electrode plate developed by Vision Battery avoids the disadvantages of both plate types and has various advantages such as high strength, thin thickness, long life, light weight and low cost.

From the structure of the paper stack electrode plate, the middle is carbon paper substrate, and the outside is "resin + conductive material". The total thickness of the small sample plates made so far is 0.38 mm (0.18 mm for the plates and 0.2 mm for the runner depth), and 1.3 mm for the single cell, which is comparable to the metal plates in terms of thinness, but much thinner than the metal plates in terms of corrosion resistance.

After data analysis, it is found that comparing the graphite bipolar plate, molded bipolar plate and metal bipolar plate, the paper stack TM electrode plate has very good performance in several performance indexes such as compressive and flexural strength (MPa), life (h), thickness (mm), quality (g/pc), production cycle and cost ($), and there is still room for further improvement in conductivity (S/cm). At present, the paper stack electrode plates can be prepared for stack loading test. In the future, paper power stack will become a strong competitor in the high power stack market.

"Policy", "capital" and "technology" are the driving force of the "double carbon" industry. "Under the boom of hydrogen energy development, Vision Hydrogen Team is committed to the development of fuel cell power reactors and systems based on its profound insight into the path of carbon reduction in the energy industry, to help achieve "carbon neutrality" as soon as possible.
