【News】International Hydrogen Energy | Egypt to build 300,000 tonnes per year hydrogen production plant from waste

On 1 June, Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone General Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with US hydrogen company H2 Industries to invest US$4 billion in a waste-to-hydrogen plant to process 4 million tonnes of municipal waste per year at Egypt's Port Said East port, with an expected annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen.

H2 Industries will provide integrated design, procurement, construction and operation services for the plant, which is planned for future global sales of hydrogen and its derivative synthetic fuels. In addition, the plant's waste materials will be transported by hydrogen-powered rubbish trucks.

The project will solve the problem of municipal waste disposal while producing clean and high-value hydrogen, which can be delivered to various countries through Port Said's unique transportation hub, making an important exploration for the large-scale demonstration application of hydrogen from waste worldwide.

【News】Europe's Airbus develops hydrogen fuel for zero-carbon flights

Airbus Europe has set up a Zero Emissions Development Centre (ZEDC) in Filton, Bristol, UK, to focus on hydrogen technology development for flight, according to CNBC. The move is the latest attempt by Airbus to support the design of next-generation aircraft, with one of the main objectives centred around work on Airbus' "cost-competitive low-temperature fuel system", which will be required for zero-emission aircraft. 2020 Airbus has said it wants to develop zero-emission commercial aircraft by 2035.

The UK's ZEDC, in conjunction with other similar Airbus research centres in Spain, Germany and France, is expected to use the first fully functional cryogenic hydrogen tank for ground testing in 2023, with flight testing starting in 2026.

Aviation has a high carbon footprint, with the World Wildlife Fund describing it as "one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions driving global climate change". Environmental groups have recently launched legal action against KLM, claiming the Dutch aviation giant misled the public about the sustainability of its flights. Earlier this year, Airbus chief executive Guillaume Fourie said the airline "will face major difficulties if we do not decarbonise at an appropriate rate".

Airbus is not the only company considering the use of hydrogen in aviation. Last year, the airline ZeroAvia said it was developing a 19-seater aircraft that would fly entirely on hydrogen, and in September 2020, it completed the first flight of a six-seater hydrogen fuel cell aircraft.
